NEW ORLEANS– In a nail-biting competition at the Convocation Center, Xavier University of Louisiana edged out Dillard University with a narrow 64-63 victory in a closely contested game on February 18, 2025. The matchup showcased decisive moments and standout performances from both teams, capturing the attention of 1,278 spirited fans in attendance.
The game began with Xavier taking a modest lead in the first quarter, outscoring Dillard 14-8. However, Dillard fought back in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to just four points by halftime. The second half continued with back-and-forth action, as Dillard took the lead in the third quarter with a 20-18 run, setting the stage for a thrilling final quarter. Despite Dillard's best efforts to maintain the momentum, Xavier held on to their slim one-point advantage to secure the victory.
For Dillard, Skyler Christmas was a standout performer, scoring 20 points with an impressive 7-of-12 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Cassidy Lowe also contributed significantly, adding 16 points and grabbing seven rebounds. D'Mya Ferguson dominated the boards with ten rebounds, showing her presence in the paint.
On the Xavier side, Janiya Reed was a key player, contributing 14 points with an efficient 6-of-7 shooting performance. Patricia Sosa Lora added 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Joy Campbell provided a spark off the bench with ten points.
Xavier's shooting accuracy, particularly from beyond the arc, played a crucial role in their victory. They connected on 36.4% of their three-point attempts compared to Dillard's 10%. However, Dillard had a better performance at the free-throw line, converting 71.4% of their attempts, compared to Xavier's 22.2%.
