The Dillard Women’s Basketball Team Pulls 78-74 Overtime Upset Over Fisk University to Advance to Semifinals of the GCAC Basketball Tournament
Little Rock, Arkansas – The Dillard women's basketball team (10-15), after trailing by as much as 17 in the third quarter, came all the way back to upset fourth seed Fisk University (9-19) in overtime 78-74 on Friday afternoon in Mims Gymnasium in the quarterfinals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The team advances and will play in the semifinals on Saturday evening.
Diniaa McZeal and Sydni John-Baptiste tied for the team lead with 14 point each. John-Baptiste also had 10 rebounds and a block. Eight of her 10 rebounds came on the offensive glass. Alexis Gie tallied 12 points and two steals. Taylor Dewitt picked up 12 points and three rebounds. Jordyn Rowe had eight points, nine rebounds and three assists. Ariana Hart had six points, three steals and two rebounds. Cassidy Lowe had six rebounds and a block. Tia Perry also had six rebounds. Sharan Turner totaled seven points plus a rebound and a block.
Fisk University was led by 32 points from Zipporah Davis. Zayla Jones totaled 16 points and six rebounds plus four steals. Ty Gardner also reached double figures with 10 points.
For the game, Dillard shot 24-for-65 from the field (36.4 percent), 2-for-9 from three-point range (22.2 percent), 28-for-45 from the line (62.2 percent). The program also had 50 rebounds, eight assists, 11 steals and five blocks.
The Lady Bulldogs were 22-for-65 from the field (33.8 percent), 5-for-17 from three-point range (29.4 percent) and 25-for-34 from the line (73.5 percent). Fisk also had 48 rebounds, 10 assists and nine steals.
Fisk led 34-24 at the half and 50-43 after the third quarter. Dillard fought all the way back to tie the game at 67 by outscoring Fisk 24-17 in the final 10 minutes of regulation. In overtime, DU were able to outscore Fisk 11-7 to come away with the 78-74 overtime victory. The closely contested game featured nine tied scores and four lead changes.
Next the team will take on top seed and host institution Philander Smith in the semifinals of the GCAC Tournament starting at 5 p.m.
