Dillard Women's Basketball Falls To Tougaloo, 70-67
New Orleans – The Dillard women's basketball team (2-7, 1-5 GCAC * two forfeits only count in conference standings for the tournament seedings) had a strong second half, but still fell on the road to Tougaloo College (2-6, 1-5 GCAC) on Saturday, Feb. 20, at The Dawg Pound by a 70-67 score. The women's team will be the seventh seed in the upcoming GCAC Tournament. The quarterfinals are hosted at conference sites. Dillard will travel to Talladega to take on the Lady Tornadoes on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.
Sophomore Taylor Dewitt (SO/Mansfield, La.) lead the team with her 17 points. She did much of her damage from the free throw line where she went 9-for-10. Senior Johnna Jones (SR/Memphis, Tenn.) had six points and three rebounds. Junior Rayah Haynes (JR/Baton Rouge, La.) totaled six points and five steals. Senior JaQuanna Hunter (SR/Vacherie, La.) totaled eight rebounds and two steals. Senior Sharan Turner (SR/Gonzales, La.) totaled nine points, five rebounds and two steals. Senior Destiny Collins (SR/New Orleans, La.) recorded five points and four assists. Freshman Ajayah Simpson (FR/Lafayette, La.) hauled in six rebounds. Freshman Sydni John-Baptiste totaled four points and four rebounds. Senior Paige Williams (SR/New Orleans, La.) totaled nine points and three steals. Sophomore D'Anna West (SO/Sugar Land, Texas) recorded five points.
Tougaloo was led by Amari Pittman's 32 points. She also had 10 rebounds and three steals. Morgan Hunter had seven points and 16 rebounds. Tyra Conerly had seven points, six assists and three steals. Tiarra Jones picked up nine points.
For the game, Dillard shot 25-for-70 from the field (45.7 percent), 1-for-10 from three-point range (10 percent), 16-for-21 from the line (76.2 percent). The program also had 34 rebounds, 14 assists and 18 steals. The team ended up turning the ball over 20 times though.
The Lady Bulldogs were 26-for-73 from the field (35.6 percent), 3-for-14 (21.4 percent) and 15-for-25 (60 percent). Tougaloo also had 49 rebounds, 11 assists, 12 steals and three blocks although they turned the ball over 26 times.
Tougaloo led 36-32 after the first 20 minutes. Dillard won the second half, 35-34, in the eventual 70-67 defeat.
Next, Dillard will be on the road for the quarterfinals of the GCAC Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 24. With a three-way tie for first place, the opponent will be determined after a coin flip on Sunday afternoon. The game time is
