Xavier (LA) Triumphs Over Dillard (LA) with an 11-4 Victory
HARAHAN,LA– In an impressive display of offensive might and effective pitching, Xavier University of Louisiana defeated Dillard University 11-4 in a game that took place on April 15, 2025, at Wilcox Field, Harahan, Louisiana. Despite a late rally by Dillard, Xavier's early lead and consistent scoring held strong, securing them a confident win.
Xavier (15-18) opened the game with a powerful first inning, scoring four runs, setting a tone that Dillard (15-14) struggled to match. Xavier's M. Covington initiated the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a series of strategic plays, including a fielder's choice by M. Mandina and a hit-by-pitch that forced in another run. The inning was capped by A. Brown's RBI single, giving Xavier a 4-0 lead.
After a scoreless second and third inning, Xavier extended their lead in the fourth and fifth innings with A. Williams and A. Dale contributing key RBIs. Covington added a sacrifice fly, capitalizing on defensive mishaps by Dillard to further the margin to 7-0 by the end of the fifth.
Dillard made a significant push in the sixth inning, scoring four runs thanks to clutch hits from Madison Clark, Ca'Terra Bates, and Haley Weatherspoon, along with a couple of Xavier errors. However, Xavier responded with a strong bottom of the sixth, scoring four additional runs, largely attributed to a critical fielding error by Dillard and subsequent hits by M. Winston and M. Covington, both of whom were instrumental throughout the match.
Xavier's pitching staff, led by A. Phillips, E. Wallace, and M. Tyler, kept Dillard at bay for most of the game. Phillips started strong, pitching three hitless innings. Wallace faced challenges in the sixth but was backed by Tyler, who closed the game without allowing further runs.
Conversely, Dillard's pitchers, Mary-Elizabeth Landry and Daila Thomas, faced difficulties containing Xavier's incisive batting lineup. Despite Landry's four strikeouts, Dillard's defensive errors compounded the challenge, ultimately leading to their defeat.
Xavier capitalized on early momentum and maintained their edge through tactical plays and exploiting Dillard's fielding errors. The game, marked by strategic base running and aggressive batting from Xavier, ended in just under two hours, with both teams showcasing their strengths and areas for improvement. Although the attendance was notably absent, the competitive spirit and skills on display made for a riveting matchup, with Xavier emerging as the clear victor.
