Dillard University Wins First Conference Championship Since 2018
TUSCALOOSA,AL– In a gripping contest held on March 2, 2025, at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the Dillard University (LA) basketball team defeated Philander Smith College (AR) with a final score of 74-72. This game showcased the intensity and competitive spirit of both teams as they fought relentlessly until the final buzzer.
The first half set the stage for a tightly contested game, with Dillard edging out Philander Smith by just one point, 34-33. Both teams demonstrated robust defensive efforts and showcased their scoring abilities, keeping the spectators on the edge of their seats. Dillard's Bentravin Phillips was instrumental during this period, providing key plays that kept his team slightly ahead.
As the second half unfolded, the intensity ramped up. Philander Smith fought back valiantly, with standout performances from Raymond Reece, who dominated the boards with 15 rebounds and contributed significantly to the scoring with 21 points. Despite their efforts, Dillard maintained their composure, thanks to Phillips, who led the team with 18 points and six assists.
Dillard's superior shooting accuracy, at 51.9% from the field compared to Philander Smith's 42.9%, proved critical in the end. Although Philander Smith showcased strong resilience and execution at the free-throw line, converting 76.5% of their attempts, it wasn't enough to overturn Dillard's lead.
Dillard's balanced offensive approach and efficient ball movement, reflected in their 17 assists, played a crucial role in their victory. Meanwhile, Philander Smith's Amorey Womack put in a solid performance with 15 points and four assists, but turnovers were a concern, with the team committing 17 compared to Dillard's 15.
The matchup, free of technical fouls, was officiated smoothly, allowing the teams to focus on their strategic plays. Ultimately, Dillard University's ability to capitalize on their scoring opportunities and maintain a slight edge in critical moments secured them the win. After the win, the conference announced the tournament awards, including All-Tournament Team and the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Three of our Bleu Devils received All-Tournament honors: Justin Warren and Tory Cargo were named All-Tournament team and Bentravin Phillips was named the tournament MVP.
