Strong Second Half Leads the Dillard Men’s Basketball Team to 79-77 Overtime Win Over Fisk University
New Orleans – The Dillard men's basketball team (6-13, 1-1 GCAC) trailed in the first half by as much as 20 points before kicking things into gear in the next 25 minutes in a thrilling 79-77 overtime victory over Fisk University (1-19, 0-2 GCAC) on Monday, Jan. 24, at Dent Hall. The win snapped what was a five-game losing skid.
DU put four players in double figures and were led by 20 points from Elijah Moore. Moore also had five assists, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Rajhan Billingsley proved clutch in the scoring all 17 of his points in the second half. He also had a near double-double with nine rebounds plus two assists. Kaleb Allison had 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Cinque Harris provided 13 points and seven rebounds. Jeremiah August totaled five points and eight rebounds. Nicholas Carmouche picked up three points, three assists and four rebounds plus a steal. Mekai Pope totaled six points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals.
For Fisk, Mario Davis led all scorers with 26 points. He also had four rebounds and three assists. AJ Hassell had 19 points. Marcus Moultrie recorded 15 points.
Dillard shot 29-for-70 from the field (41.4 percent), 8-for-19 from three-point range (42.1 percent) and 13-for-23 from the free throw line (56.5 percent). The program also picked up 48 rebounds, 17 assists, eight blocks and seven steals. The Bulldogs shot 26-for-64 from the field (40.6 percent), 13-for-29 (44.8 percent) from three-point range and 12-for-15 (80 percent) from the free throw line. Fisk also totaled 6 rebounds, 18 assists, six blocks and seven steals.
Fisk jumped out to a 42-25 lead after the first 20 minutes. Dillard fought all the way back to tie things up at the end of regulation at 66 by outscoring Fisk 41-24. In the overtime session, Dillard nipped the Bulldogs, 13-11, to escape with the hard fought 79-77 win.
The men's basketball team is next in action on Thursday, Jan. 27, when the program gets back on the road and takes on Philander Smith at 7:30 p.m. in Little Rock, Arkansas.
