Dillard Triumphs Over Harris-Stowe with 8-4 Victory at Rickwood Field
BIRMINGHAM, AL– On February 8, 2025, Dillard University from Louisiana faced off against Harris-Stowe State University from Missouri in a baseball matchup held at the historical Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The game, which started at 11:45 AM, saw Dillard emerge victorious with an 8-4 win.
The first few innings saw a quiet start, with neither team scoring until Dillard broke the silence in the third inning. Jaylen Mateo's single to right field brought Braylon Guerin home, giving Dillard a 1-0 lead. Dillard continued their offensive stride in the fourth inning. Guerin doubled to right field, allowing Chazz Clark to score, and later Mateo singled to center, scoring Guerin, bringing the score to 3-0.
In the sixth inning, Dillard added another run with a single from Derrald Moore Jr, which brought Clark home, extending their lead to 4-0. Harris-Stowe responded in the bottom of the sixth with J. Kelly and D. Cornell-N each contributing RBIs, but it only reduced the deficit to 4-2.
The seventh inning proved decisive for Dillard. Clark's groundout RBI and a series of errors and wild pitches by Harris-Stowe allowed Dillard to score four more runs, increasing their lead to 8-2. Although Harris-Stowe managed to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh, it wasn't enough to close the gap, and Dillard sealed the win at 8-4.
Dillard's Guerin was a standout player, contributing significantly with two hits, including a double, and scoring three runs. Dillard's pitcher, Brandon Dickerson II, earned the win by pitching 5.1 innings, allowing only two runs on five hits.
Harris-Stowe showed resilience with efforts from Z. Tillman and M. Gutierrez, who each managed to bring in runs. However, their four errors hindered their performance, giving Dillard the upper hand.
The game, attended by about 100 spectators, lasted just over two hours, showcasing a disciplined performance by Dillard, who managed to capitalize on Harris-Stowe's mistakes and maintain a robust defense throughout the match.
