Dillard Falls in Opening Game of Shreveport Regional
Shreveport, LA- Dillard falls ,2-5, to fourth-seed MidAmerica Nazarene after a solid performance in their first national tournament appearance. Dillard came into the day as the fifth seed and still trying to build on the momentum from their conference title. The Pioneers would outlast the Bleu Devils, holding them scoreless for eight innings and positioning themselves in the winner's bracket.
Dillard would get off to a hot start in the first inning as Kwailty Williams doubled to left center field. Jalen Ayers would then advance him to third as he beat out the shortstops throw to first base. George Alveraz would make an immediate impact on the game as he hit a sac fly to score the game's first run. Right after him, Tyler Fitch would hit a big triple to score another run and put the Bleu Devils up two runs. After the big first inning by Dillard, they would hold the lead until the bottom of the second inning. That would be the last time the Bleu Devils scored the remainder of the contest. The Pioneers would go on to score a run in the first four innings and one additional run in the seventh inning to cap off the opening game win. Jorge Guerra would pitch the full eight innings and have six strikeouts.
Dillard is still not out of the tournament yet, as they now have to battle back without any more losses. This is familiar territory for them, as they won three games in two days to claim the conference championship after taking a loss. They will face off tomorrow, May 16, 2023 at 11 a.m. CST, against the loser of the McPherson/Morningside match-up today at 2:30.
